Colon surgery is going through major development by utilizing minimally invasive surgical techniques that guarantees the best recovery experience for the patient, and avoids many of the complications of open surgery.
Dr. Abdul Aziz Mamdouh Saleem, Colon and Rectal Surgery Consultant, at the International Medical Center in Jeddah, explained that the laparoscopic colon resection has many benefits for patients.
He added that, recently, he performed a laparoscopic sigmoid resection to a 32-year-old patient who had recurrent complicated diverticulitis at the IMC, utilizing very small incisions, whereas the patient was discharged three days after the operation.
“The outcomes of the laparoscopic colon resection is far better than the traditional approach, as patients reported less pain, faster wound healing due to the small incision, less wound infections, and quicker recovery. As a result, patients can be discharged from the hospital and continuetheir normal life within three to five days after the surgery,” Dr. Abdul Aziz said.
